Oct 29 2006: Conversation with Deepti Naval

Deepti Naval has made her debut with the movie Ek Baar Phir in the year 1979 and has acted in more than 60 films since then. Among these are Chashmebaddoor, Kamla, Mirch Masala, Ankahi, Main Zinda Hoon, Panchvati, and more recently, Leela and Freaky Chakra. She also wrote and directed Thodasa Aasmaan, a TV serial about women, and produced a travel show called The Path Less Traveled. A selection of poems in Hindi, Lamha-Lamha was published in 1983 and more recently, MapinLit brought out a new collection called BLACK WIND and Other Poems. She is also a painter and photographer with several exhibitions to her credit.

Aug 1: David Gallo and a Tour of "Atlantis"

David works closely with scientists and engineers at the forefront of global exploration and discovery. He has participated in numerous expeditions to the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean, and to the Mediterranean Sea. David was one of the first oceanographers to use a combination of manned submersibles and robots to map the undersea world. He spoke about the explored and unexplored parts of the ocean especially about the Indian Ocean and possible collaborations with Indian counterparts.

David took our guests on a tour of "Atlantis" and "Alvin". At 274 Ft in length, R/V Atlantis is designed as a general purpose research vehicle. It has more than 3500 sq ft of laboratory space and carries a complement of 23 officers and crew, 23 scientists & 13 deep submergence pilots and technicians.

WHOI operates the US Navy-owned Deep Submergence Vehicle (DSV) Alvin as a national oceanographic facility. The submersible's most famous exploits include locating a hydrogen bomb accidentally dropped into the Mediterranean Sea in 1966, exploring deep-sea hydrothermal vents discovered some two decades ago, and surveying the sunken ocean liner Titanic.

June 2: Interview with Lawrence Bender & Screening of "An Inconvenient Truth"

Lawrence Bender is one of the producers of "An Inconvenient Truth", a Sundance Film Festival hit, which offers a passionate and inspirational look at Al Gore's commitment to expose the myths and misconceptions that surround global warming and inspire actions to prevent it. Lawrence works in Hollywood, CA, running the day-to-day operations of his own production company, Lawrence Bender Productions and A Band Apart, a company that he started with Quentin Tarantino. His credentials include producing Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting and many more films.

Tanusree Shankar, Ananda Shankar's wife, is the choreographer and manager of her dance company. She was trained in the Shankar Gharana by Ananda's mother Smt. Amala Shankar, and has established herself as one of the leading choreographers in India. She has acted in several films and TV serials, including Satyajit Ray Presents - but her first love is dance and choreography.

May 14: Up Close and Personal with Sivamani

Sivamani is one of India's best-known and most colorful percussionists. He has been a principal percussionist, both live and in records, for the world-renowned film composer, A.R.Rehman, whose musical "Bombay Dreams" was recently staged in London and New York. Sivamani is a permanent fixture at concerts with Louis Bank, the uncrowned king of Indian Jazz concerts.

May 13: TiECON Closing Ceremonies at the Global Bazaar

TG developed and produced the event, attended by over 1000 people. Presenting a new progressive party format, the event began with cocktails, continued with dinner and concluded with the preview of a dance "A Slipping Glimpse", a collaboration between two renowned dance companies from San Francisco and Kolkata; and an electrifying performance by Double violin virtuoso Gingger and drumming dynamo, Sivamani. The evening ended with more than 500 guests dancing in the disco decorated with lighting sculptures by Andres and music by DJ Salim

May 1: Lunch with Usha Uthup

Usha Uthup sings in more than thirteen Indian languages and eight foreign languages, and has been enthralling audiences with her powerful and melodious voice since 1969. She is the only artist to have recorded six albums in English with HMV/EMI.

April 5: Raqs Media Collective at Villa Montalvo

Raqs is a collective of media practitioners that works in new media & digital art, documentaries, photography, media theory & research, writing, critiques. The guests were the co-founders, Shuddhabrata Sengupta, Monica Narula and Jeebesh Bagchi.
